FEPS Outings; Sunday 11 May 2025 Cambridge

PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGES BELOW. This is due to the planned closure of all railway routes into Cambridge on June 8.

Our next outing will be on SUNDAY 11 MAY 2025.
A visit to the University City of Cambridge. You’ll need to travel, by train from Liverpool St on Greater Anglia, or from Farringdon/St Pancras on ThamesLink. Some of you may prefer to go by car, it’s only about 60 miles by road from the Ruislip area to the Trumpington ‘Park & Ride’, where you can get a bus into the city centre. Both of the trains and the P&R buses have ‘GroupSave’ discounts if you travel in groups of three or more. The journey takes 2-3 hours either way. We do not recommend driving into the centre of Cambridge, as many roads are restricted and parking is not encouraged! Use the Park & Ride.
As with previous city outings, we will have a ‘suggested route’ to follow, which will include the many historical buildings, ‘The Backs’, views of the Colleges, churches, rivers, bridges, punts and punters! We also encourage members to explore and find their own way around. Similar to Oxford, most of the Colleges are either closed to visitors, or will charge entry for visitors to enter their grounds and buildings. There is plenty to see and photograph without having to pay the extra.
We plan on gathering at a Wetherspoons pub late afternoon for refreshments and a meal, which is nearer to the station and near to the main stop for the PR3 bus to Trumpington.

PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WISH TO JOIN US.
Further details will be provided by email nearer the date of the outing, to members who contact us, including suggestions for travel options and train tickets.

The following outing will be on SUNDAY 8 JUNE 2025. HAMMERSMITH, CHISWICK VILLAGE & BARNES.
Starting from Hammersmith Piccadilly & District Line Underground Station, we’ll look at a few of the historical or unusual buildings in Hammersmith. We then head towards the River Thames to the infamous Hammersmith Bridge, now only open to pedestrians. We’ll continue along the North bank path Westwards, past several famous pubs including ‘The Blue Anchor’ (of ‘New Tricks’ fame), and on to Chiswick Village and the Fullers Griffin Brewery at Hogarth Roundabout. Then on to the RNLI Headquarters, close to the terminus of the E3 bus which can take you to Turnham Green or Acton Town for The Underground, or on to Greenford.
For those happy to continue walking, we’ll proceed through Dukes Meadows and cross the river via a footpath attached to Barnes Railway Bridge (very close to the trains!). A short walk along The Terrace through Barnes, where we hope to stop for refreshment or a meal at a riverside pub, and then a bus back towards Hammersmith Bridge to return to the Station.

PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WISH TO JOIN US.
Further details will be provided by email nearer the date of the outing, to members who contact us.

(This trip has replaced the planned outing to Alexandra Palace previously announced. The Alexandra Palace Trust now require permits for all photography, amateur and professional, within the park, but have made it very difficult for amateur photographers to actually get a permit to photograph from this famous London viewpoint. If we ever get a positive response from the Alexandra Palace Trust to our inquiries, we may consider re-scheduling a FEPS Outing there!)

All outing dates are subject to change due to transport strike action or adverse weather. Members can join the ‘Field End outings’ WhatsApp group to keep in touch about travel issues and meeting places.
